Suncoast Aquatic Safety
Course Information

                                                                                  Lifeguarding/Shallow Water Lifeguarding: 
A 21.5 hour blended learning course held over a weekend of in-person skills and tests. The prerequisite requirements are:

•    Full completion of the online course before the first day of in-person skills session.
•    A rigorous swimming endurance test and 10lb brick dive retrieval test.
After full completion of the you will be given a 2 year American Red Cross Lifeguarding certification w/ CPR/AED & First Aid for Professional Rescuers. You additionally may see this class being offered with the modules in the module section.


                                                                                                Learn-To-Swim Levels 1-6:
A collection of classes based on swimmer proficiency level, based on meeting the objectives of each level which are as following:

•    Level 1 - Introduction to Water Skills: Students will learn how to feel comfortable in the water and safely enjoy it.
•    Level 2 - Fundamentals of Aquatic Skill: Children will learn basic propulsive skills on the front and back.
•    Level 3 - Stroke Development:  Additional guided practice builds on skills learned in levels 1 & 2 will help students achieve water competency.
•    Level 4 - Stroke Improvement:  Kids will gain confidence during swim lessons, improve their strokes and gain additional aquatic skills.
•    Level 5 - Stroke Refinement: Guidance allows kids to refine their strokes and become more efficient swimmers.
•    Level 6 - Swimming and Skill Proficiency: Students will learn to swim with ease and efficiency, swimming smoothly over greater distance.
Past Level 6 it is recommended to contact a local swim team if you or your child are interested on swimming for sport or professionally. These classes may be held at your backyard pool or public pools depending on preference and instructor availability, usually in 30 minute sessions or 60 minute sessions.                            

                                                                                                       Basic Life Support:
Basic Life Support (BLS) is generally a prerequisite for working at any hospitals, clinics and other healthcare facilities, it mostly covers CPR/AED in a hospital setting with proper rescue equipment, as well as life saving medication like Naloxone & Epinephrine administration. It is 2 hours long.

                                                                                          Safety Training for Swim Coaches: 
This course helps to fulfill the Coaches Safety Education requirement for USA Swimming and Y USA with a 2 year certification. If you are already lifeguarding certified you are not required to take this class. It will cover water rescue, CPR/AED and best safety practices in the water, it is a 1 day course with an online section and an in-person skills session.

                                                                               General Water Safety and/or Basic Water Rescue: 
Both of these classes are similar and intended for parents, pool attendants and people who work around water. These are cheaper and much shorter than lifeguarding; taking around 30 minutes with some skill practices and learning general water safety skills like recognizing drowning and best practices in the water. This does not cover beach hazards.


                                                                                                                Modules
Modules are skill add-ons to base classes which expand your knowledge and scope with common scenarios you may encounter:

•    Waterfront Module: Lifeguard exclusive module; class is hosted on a lake and covers waterfront rescue techniques and other protocols.
•    Bloodborne Pathogens: Covers basic biohazard protocol, how to clean up and deal with biohazards, prevent spread, and protect yourself.
•    Administering Emergency Oxygen: Covers the anatomy of oxygen tanks & tubing, when to give oxygen, how to take an SpO2, etc.
•    First Aid For Public Safety Personnel (Title 22): A 21-hour training which covers advanced first aid, CPR/AED, and trauma care.
•    Asthma Inhaler Training: Covers how to administer an Asthma inhaler, how they work, when to administer one, and legal ramifications thereof.
•    Epinephrine Auto-Injector Training: Covers how to and when to administer an EpiPen™️and the legal ramifications thereof.
